The boatswain's whistle, or bosun's whistle, is a membrane-less signaling whistle used on warships of all nations. There are no manufacturer's markings, except for the broad arrow of the War Department.
This whistle consists of a narrow tube (the barrel) that directs air over a metal sphere (the buoy) pierced with a hole on top. The user opens and closes their hand over the hole to alter the pitch of the sound. The rest of the whistle comprises a "keel," a flat metal piece located beneath the barrel that holds the assembly together, and a "shackle," a ring that allows for the attachment of a long white cord worn around the neck.
This is an original issue model of the Royal Navy WW2 éra. Not to be confused with the numerous Pakistani reproductions that flood the market. This issue model is very difficult to find. Complete, with a beautiful overall patina, in working order..
