US M5-1 bayonet for Garand rifle, manufactured by Jones & Dickinson Tool, produced from 1956 onwards. Excellent overall condition.
The M5 bayonet (the only one without a locking ring designed by the USA) was developed in the early 1950s during the Korean War and was officially adopted by the US Army in 1953. It was designed to replace the M1 bayonet, which was difficult to remove while wearing gloves. Unlike the M1 model, this shorter, lighter, and more ergonomic knife-bayonet can also be used as a combat dagger. Another significant advantage is its lower production cost.
The scabbard typically used for this bayonet is a later generation US M8A1 model, which, starting in December 1955, was reinforced with a sturdy phosphated steel ferrule designed to prevent the end of the body from being easily crushed.
