Original WWII Us Government issue Dietzgen Plane Table Alidade w Leather Case & Magnetic North Attachment.
These instruments were used in map making and surveying, especially by the US military and engineering corps. The alidade is a device that allows one to sight a distant object and use the line of sight to perform a task. The task could be to measure an angle to the object from some reference point or to draw a line on a plane table in the direction of the object. The alidade and compass needle appear to be in very good to excellent condition. The alidade has a 10" brass bar, a sensitive leveling bubble, and a brass leveling screw. The sighting mechanism has a black folding bar with 3 small holes, and a slit from the top hole to the bottom. The opposite end also folds down, and consists of a graduated bar reading from 0 to 400 mils, and from 400 mils to 0 with a horizontal sliding mechanism to read the number of mils sited. A fine hairline in the center is in excellent condition. The 10" horizontal bar is graduated in inches and can be read to the nearest 1/100 inch.. Excellent overall condition.
