The 3rd American Infantry Division, (3rd Infantry Division) is nicknamed Rock of the Marne, for its contribution to the second battle of the Marne.
The division was also at the forefront of the American assault during the Second World War, fighting from Casablanca (Morocco) during Operation Torch to Salzburg (Austria) via Palermo, Anzio, Tome, Operation Anvil Dragon, the Battle of the Vosges, the Battle of the Colmar Pocket, the Siegfried Line, Nuremberg, Munich and Berchtesgaden, i.e. 531 days of continuous fighting. This allowed 36 of its soldiers to win the highest American military distinction, the Medal of Honor.
